Wilton Fire Marshal's Office

October 14, 2004
Press Release:

The Wilton Fire Department is participating in the "Change your clock, Change your battery" program. We are encouraging residents to be proactive with their smoke alarm maintenance and change the battery annually. This year the date for turning the clocks back is October 31 so treat your family to an extra safe Halloween and change the battery in your smoke alarm.

Smoke alarms are installed in approximately 95% of American homes, this is a great improvement. The problem is that in about 20% of those homes the smoke alarm batteries are missing or dead. It is in these homes that the majority of the American fire deaths occur. Installing fresh batteries each year could change this statistic dramatically.

Smoke alarms provide an early warning that a smoke condition or fire is occurring in the home. You only have a short amount of time to escape once the alarm sounds. WORKING smoke alarms can improve the chances of survival of a fire in your home by 50%. Please check on your less fortunate neighbors or elderly friends to make sure that their smoke alarms have a treat for Halloween, fresh batteries.

The member of the Wilton Fire Department would like to wish everyone a happy and fire safe Halloween. Look for our truck at the Chamber of Commerce Halloween Parade on October 30 in "the Center" and check our website for additional fire safety information www.wiltonfire.org.
